Wind generates 8.4% of global electricity as a clean energy source. Compare Wind power generation by country with 2024 data and track the low-carbon transition.
The Global Wind Report -2025 represented by Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) gives an overview on the wind energy industry in 2024. Compared to 2023, wind power production increased by 11% bringing the total installed capacity to 1,136 GW. With 117 GW of new installations worldwide 2024 marked another record year for wind energy.
With this impressive new capacity, China accounts for 72% of the global market for new wind turbines – a steady increase from 65% in 2023 and 58% in 2022. Although also China also fell slightly short of the expected new capacity of nearly 100 GW, the record cements China's dominant role in global wind power development.
Wind accounts for almost a third of growth, second only to solar PV, which accounts for 60%. Although wind power continues to face supply chain issues, rising costs and permitting delays today, global capacity is still expected to nearly double to over 2 000 gigawatts (GW) by 2030 as both advanced and developing economies tackle these barriers.
Annual electricity generation from wind is measured in terawatt-hours (TWh) per year. This includes both onshore and offshore wind sources.
The Global Wind Power Tracker (GWPT) is a worldwide dataset of utility-scale, on and offshore wind facilities. It includes wind farm phases with capacities of 10 megawatts (MW) or more. A wind project
Global offshore wind is gearing up for a comeback in 2025, with new capacity additions expected to hit 19 GW, according to Rystad Energy.
